Check out the Audio Masterclass Music Production and Sound Engineering Course at bit.ly/3W3tpKo Transcription of commentary: Here we have the STC 4038 ribbon microphone, demonstrated here by Guy Barzily singing part of “I should’ve run to you” by Rob Raede - that’s R A E D E in case I have pronounced it incorrectly. I should’ve run to you is featured as a complete multitrack recording in the Audio Masterclass Professional Course in Mixing.
This particular mic is owned by Abbey Road Studios and here we are in Abbey Road Studio 2. Let’s listen to the vocal, in isolation from the backing track that Guy is listening to in his headphones…
I hear this as a rich, quite dark sound. The 4038 is a full-sounding mic. A BBC engineer once told me that they used it for their World Service broadcasts because it was more intelligible than other mic over a distance of several thousand miles.
Although this particular mic is more than 50 years old, the 4038 is still available under the Coles brand. The specifications haven’t changed and modern examples are considered to sound very similar to the originals.
I’m David Mellor, Course Director of Audio Masterclass. Let’s hear the mic again…
