This video takes a recording of bass guitar and splits it into two frequency bands. By doing this, the two bands can be processed differently to achieve novel and interesting sound textures. Check out the Audio Masterclass Music Production and Sound Engineering Course at bit.ly/3W3tpKo
In this example, the lower band is left unprocessed. The upper band is treated with compression and harmonic generation. As you will hear, this causes a certain amount of noise, which is audible when the bass guitar is not playing. To remove this, an expander/gate plug-in is inserted to clean up the track.
The result is a vibrant sound that would not be obtainable by other means. It isn't common - or necessary - to band split the bass or any other instrument. But it is always interesting to look for novel sound textures using innovative and unusual techniques.
