Isn't it about time you had your own iPhone app?
Without doubt mobile phone apps are popular. Hugely popular if you have an iPhone, very popular if you have an Android phone, and jolly good luck to you if you have a Nokia or anything else!
Websites are popular too, and if your band doesn't have one, there's a bit of a 'why not?' going on.
It doesn't take that much technical knowledge to make a website that is pretty professional in appearance. I reckon the essential skills necessary would take no more than a two-day course at most.
OK, it's not going to be database-driven with lots of fangly Javascript, but it doesn't have to be. Photos, biog, reviews and tour dates are all you need. A bit of audio will be nice.
But designing an iPhone app is very much a technical experience. Learning how to do that is going to take a lot of energy out of your bid for musical success. It wouldn't be worth the effort and distraction.
Of course, you could hire a developer to do the tricky stuff for you. But the problem with that is that unless you have the ability to give strong guidance, the developer will go his own sweet way and you'll end up with something that isn't what you really wanted.
But soon you'll be able to design an iPhone app with ease, courtesy of appOmator. Yes, they call it appOmator, with a capital 'O'.
The idea is that you can build an app by dragging and dropping images, audio and video, supposedly as simply as that.
Then you can run the app in simulation as though it was running on a real iPhone.
Once perfected, you can upload it to the Apple app store through appOmator's account. Being a certified Apple iPhone app developer is a whole degree course in its own right, so going through a third party could be exactly the right thing to do.
Of course there is a cost involved, but hopefully there will be a profit too, in terms of promotion and exposure for your band.
