EngineEars presents Seeing Sounds workshop with MixedByAli

Sunday, September 9, 2018, is the date of the inaugural “Seeing Sounds” workshop event featuring multi-GRAMMY®-winning engineer Derek “MixedByAli” Ali. The event, the first in a series to be held in the U.S. and abroad, is presented by EngineEars and organized by Karen Dunn of KMD Productions. It will be held at 1500 Sound Academy in Inglewood, CA, from 3 to 8 p.m., and will feature Ali offering his unique perspective on the art of mixing and getting into the music business. Future events are set to take place in Las Vegas, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, New York City and Boston, London, Paris, Berlin, West and South Africa, and other regions.

In this inaugural workshop, Ali will talk about his unusual path to success in the music industry — from high school All-American football player to becoming a multi-platinum, multi-GRAMMY Award-winning mixing engineer for Kendrick Lamar and being named a Forbes 30-Under-30 recipient and beyond. He will also discuss his gear choices and what he uses in the studio.

In this workshop, 35 attendees will learn how Ali creates his unique sounds and watch him deconstruct one of his hits. Following that will be the opportunity for some hands-on experience trying out Ali’s techniques. The evening will end with an open Q&A and networking with some and some of the hottest names in the business. Confirmed sponsors for the inaugural event include EngineEars & Top Dawg Entertainment, ADAM Audio, Apogee, Avid, Landr, NAMM, Sennheiser, Slate Digital and KMD Productions.

A limited number of sponsorships are still available for this and future “Seeing Sounds” events. Benefits include branding, real-time research, thought leadership and networking opportunity with the 17- to 32-year-old demographic, which includes students and emerging engineers.

If you would like to learn more about Ali, the event or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Karen Dunn at SeeingSounds@EngineEars.org or (925) 708-0307.

About Derek “MixedByAli” Ali

Derek “MixedByAli” Ali is a 28-year-old Forbes 30-Under-30 musician and multi-platinum, 4x GRAMMY Award-winning mixing engineer, born and raised in Gardena, California. His unique sound was first heard as a key element behind Kendrick Lamar’s Section.80 album, released in 2011. Shortly after that, Kendrick signed to Aftermath, and Dre became Ali’s mentor. Dre and Ali mixed Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City album together in 2012, and Ali was able to bridge the gap between his unorthodox mixing style of random sounds and effects with Dre’s classic deep bass, snapping snares & hard-hitting drum analogue techniques -- ‘MixedByAli’ is that sound. Since Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City, Ali has recorded and mixed several more #1 records, won several awards and helped some of the biggest artists cultivate a sound that the world loves today.
