The Waves J37 is a plug-in emulation of the Studer J37 analogue tape recorder from the 1960s, based on an example owned by Abbey Road Studios in London.
What you should expect from analog tape is a certain amount of warmth, or you might prefer to call it distortion. Also there will be a slightly uneven frequency response, wow and flutter, noise, and a spreading out of frequencies caused by scrape flutter. It all adds a certain richness and smoothness to the sound.
In this demonstration I'm going to set the wow and flutter to their minimum values. I'll set a moderate recording level, and test the three types of tape that the plug-in emulates.
