Changing the pitch of an audio signal was (and still is) possible with analog technology. All you have to do is speed up or slow down a tape recorder. You can do it either on record or playback. If you record a signal at 38 centimetres per second (15 inches per second) and play it back at a slower speed, then it will sound at a lower pitch. Play it at a faster speed and it will sound at a higher pitch.
Alternatively, you could record at a faster speed and play back at 38 centimetres per second (which is the most commonly used speed in analog tape recording) and the result will be at a lower pitch than the original.
