The idea behind PHWG is a one-man orchestra with a guitar, computer, and a dream to make the music that I love. My influences are Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Steve Vai, Marty Friedman, Jean Michelle Jarre, Beethoven and Bach.
My musical process is focused on my DAW station. Usually my musical ideas come from a guitar riff or melody and are developed from that into a musical composition. I am a HUGE fan of textures – so before I start recording my guitars I get a general idea of what I want to present, sonically, to the listener. I like rich, thick, blankets of sounds to surround you. My first CD “Great Wall of Sound” was my personal explorations in this philosophy, and my 2nd solo CD (currently in production) is a further exploration of this, however, this CD is more guitar driven.
I am also a Sound Designer and happily let that aspect of me lend itself into my music. My Composition BLUE is just that – a combination of sound design elements combined with more traditional means of composition. I recorded all elements in Nuendo – and used keyboard and synth sounds from Reason. Guitars where recorded and mixed in my project studio, I used a POD – going through a BBE (Sonic Maximizer) for tracking – and relied heavily on UAD’s Pultec Pro’s EQ to bring out the guitar in the mix. The drum track I used was ToonTrack’s EZDrummer. Before I really mix everything I sit down and notate what aspects I want to be highlighted. I usually do 7-8 separate guitar tracks, and 4-5 synth tracks, which could be really problematic (especially since I am limited with a small budget studio), and it is important to make sure that every instrument has a space and a place in my idea of a “great wall of sound”. I also use anything that I find pleasing to the ear, which means I mix instrumentation (violins, strings, piano – with distorted guitars, heavy synths, percussion, and hard rock drums) and I am also not afraid to dip my creativity in different styles of music. Basically I am a rocker (grew up with Heavy Metal) that loves electronic music, classical, ambient, blues, and use it in my writing.
Thanks for your time, and enjoy. Stay tuned for my 2nd CD due out in the Fall of 2008.
