Bad Audio Diary BAD1: Incredible audio errors in UK government video
This video shows an appalling example of bad audio - a Facebook promotion by the UK government on Brexit (the UK's withdrawal from the European Union).
The level is extremely low, there are compression artefacts, echoes, intermittent noise, and a dull frequency balance.
So what can be done about this? Well nothing now, but the video considers how the problems might have been anticipated.
And all of this came at considerable cost to the UK taxpayer!

Audio Masterclass replies to Sean Kenny: Following my previous reply, I created an out-of-phase recording of speech and compressed it to 48 kbit/s using Apple Compressor. Apart from being out of phase, and slightly degraded due to the low bit rate, it sounds fine. However compressing to MP3 32 kbit/s significantly increases the artefacts. Still not as bad as the Brexit examples though.
Audio Masterclass replies to Sean Kenny: Well spotted. Data compressing out-of-phase audio is not likely to end well and indeed might be the cause of the artefacts. I'll try a few tests and if the results are interesting I'll post a video on the topic. DM
midnight763: Love reading between the lines ππππππππ
TheGurner1: Bad! Not the good sort of bad either ;-)
credenza1: I found the audio level of May's voice just about perfect at the start. Perhaps the initial lack of genuine commitment to the intended sonic outcome is a metaphor.
