To start with, I write the song and get a musical image in my head for the arrangement. Once I'm satisfied with the idea to be presented I start making tracks.

I use an Alesis SR16 Drum machine to program the rhytm tracks and once composed, saved, I record the drums to 2 separate tracks on my TASCAM 2488 recorder in stereo.

Next I record a bass track direct to the dedicated instrument input on the recorder. I sing along without mics while recording the bass track to keep an accurate compass of where I'm at and what I'm playing. Next will come the acoustic guitar tracks. I normally do 2 different rhythm tracks, one playing open chords, the other capoed and using a high 3rd string tuning. I use a vintage EV 1751 battery powered condenser mic for these guitar tracks.

Then comes the lead vocal track. I use a Nueman U87 and an RCA DX44 ribbon mic. I double mic the lead vocals on my voice to insure I get what I want for the particular song.

Last comes the lead guitar, dobro, harmonias, and pedal steel. The guitars are all recorded differently. An electric lead (telecaster) is recorded direct from stereo outputs of a BOSS GT8 Multi effects unit. No amplifier involved.

Harmonicas and dobro (acoustic) are mic'ed using SM57 or MXL 67 Condenser.

Pedal steel, if used, is recorded direct from a DIGITECH STUDIO TWIN processor and double tracked into the 2488 instrument direct in channel.

On this particular recording, all tracks were recorded flat, uncompressed, and unprocessed. I performed a flat mix to TASCAM RW900SL Pro CD recorder.

After making sure the mix is what I wanted, according to my ears, ha ha, I recorded the CD mix back to 2 stereo tracks on the 2488. Now I have some excellent control for the master, final burn.

The 2488's EQ is really decent used this way. Also the effects system built in to the 2488 gives pretty decent control. Reverbs, delays, chorus and compression.

BUT....I only use the reverb and delay features on the vocals. I send the signals, left and right, to my Alesis 3630 conpressor/limiter, to the DIGITECH STUDIO TWIN and final to BBE 862 for maximizing.

If I'm happy with what I hear on my KRK passive monitors, I burn a final CD to the 900SL. Then I test play in a multitude of playback systems, car, home stereo, computer etc. Sometimes I need to go back and tweak some frequencies, especially in midrange.

I'm pretty happy right now with what I can afford. My studio is a 1 room bedroom studio.
