Watch a short video on how to get the best gain setting in your audio interface
Setting the gain control on your audio interface for recording

It is essential to set the gain of the microphone preamplifier in your audio interface correctly to get the best possible recording. Not too high, not too low, but just right. But exactly what is 'just right'? The answer might be simpler than you think.

Because this video is about setting the gain of a microphone preamplifier, there are demonstrations of the gain being set too high, which results in a loud soundtrack in parts. You should set your monitor level to a level that is comfortable for the speech at the start of the video, and then be ready to turn the monitors down when it gets loud.

The video is best watched full-screen, and you should listen on studio monitors or studio grade headphones.
