In response to What is the ONE thing you MOST need to know to make great recordings?, Fountain Music writes...

Another aspect, is keeping the frequencies leveled. make sure it shouldn't jump to loud in a certain frequency, even for a second. another realy big factor, is when you have compression, the attack and ratio shouldnt be that far appart. meaning that from the attack till the copression, there shouldt be a big diffrence in db. the main you should focus on, that it should be comfortable for the ear. so if your mixing a song, and after lisening to it queit a while it strains your ears, there must be a problem in, not steady volume, or frequency evency. the bottom line, try to make it comfortable for the ear. once that's done whatever you do it will be a great mix (off course not doing somthing crazy).

In response to Mastering at home - an oxymoron?, Pram Maven writes...

I hope this doesn't sound like invective, but a turd is still a turd, whether it was polished or not. Anyone who would try to justify attempting to make something sound better than it is would have a very long and illustrious career in politics.

As far as your suggestion to send in some mastered/unmastered music in the form of 30 clip installments of each, I'm afraid that's not possible. As I said, I master AS I GO. I also don't use many effects- just compression, equalization, reverb or delay, noise reduction, and possibly chorus. I also listen to the mix on studio monitors in and out of the room, from upstairs, on cheap headphones, on expensive headphones, on earbud headphones...

My point is, if you know what sound you are going for, and you can hear the intricacies of the best elements of the music you grew up hearing, as far as technical considerations go, then you should be able to reproduce them in a 20'x 30' room, especially if it has been treated.

I think part of the reason why I have been successful with this is because I take note of the proximity effect and apply corrective EQ to minimize it when I eat the microphone. This coupled with noise reduction in the Zoom pedal allows for the cancellation of early reflections and gives less clue to the listener as to the acoustics of the room. As the room is fairly large and I use pedal compression, I don't have to be very loud when I'm singing or scatting, or whatever I'm doing- the microphone picks up only what I want it to.

I suppose all of the above is just a workaround that I discovered by chance and complete coincidence, and I ran with it. But my selling point (and this scares a lot of sound engineers) is the fact that my process could be used by pretty much anyone, with any Mac or PC. The reason being that the sound is not dependent on plugins; it's all hardware-based. It's fairly portable, too.

I hope that this information is not taken as a threat to anyone who works as a sound engineer, but rather as more of a revelation- here's a process that simplifies recording, mixing and mastering, and allows the completion of a song in just two days-- one day for recording, and one day for mixing. The mastering is already done during the recording process, one track at a time.

In response to When you are mixing, what is the first thing you should do? What is the last? (And what should you NOT do?), Keith writes...

I was hoping you'd spend more time getting into building a mix....which instruments you deal with first.....how you fit things together with regard to eq....compression.....etc.

RP response: That's why we have the Audio Masterclass course! :-)

In response to Seven PRO microphones compared - with audio!, Tyrone Culley writes...

I will take #7. I love the warmth that starts at 5 and progresses to #7. 1 is pretty flat where as 2 and 3 are pretty tin can sounding. 4 is close to the same as it was not real smooth. 6 and 7 are my favorites. They did not jump out at you and were very warm. They sounded like Tube mics to me, but I am not expert. I would personally like to know what those 3 mics were.

RP response: A link to the results has now been added to the article.

In response to Behringer's Ultragain ADA8000 mic pre misses a trick, Tom Rafferty writes...

Wouldn't the analogue outs be used to send from the digital source (say, Pro-Tools) back to the ADA8000 via the light-pipe then to a mixing desk via the analogue outs so as to use the faders to mix with?

RP response: Yes indeed, that is probably what the analog outs are intended for.

In response to Why is recording so difficult?, Quincin Williams writes...

Wow! good article. It's funny that some don't realize that there is some equipment in their basements or studios that does an excellent job. You have to know how to work with what you have to make it sound like the pros. The problem is many buy instruments for one thing only, not realizing that the instrument they've purchased have many different uses. I use an old Oktava condenser mike that I bought 6 years ago and I can get it to sound just like the pros. You can check out the sound quality at myspace.com/quincinwilliams. Almost every hip hop producer tells me that pro tools is better than anything out there, but I can use Cubase and knock their socks off... I may not make it to the pros, but I've made lots of touchdowns in the world leage of producing music, peace...

In response to Why are most record producers men?, Jenni Fagan writes...

Hello,

I am doing a dissertation on gender equality in music and I am also a female musician for around fifteen years. To think of a few female music producers of the topy of my head I would really mostly only know guitar based music so people such as Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, Madonna, Missy Elliot, 4 non Blondes, etc - their are many women producing their own records in various fields but no they are not as well known or perhaps as pushy about trying to be as well known as their male counterparts. Did Vivaldi not have an all female orchestra?

I think what you need to consider is how long woman have had equality for ... to have the money and independence to pursue their own talents as composers or producers is something that not so long ago - was only afforded to an elite with the independent wealth to support it. The fact that society has been structured not to push it's woman to become the next great composer or producer and has up until very recently really - expected it's woman to stay at home and provide for and support these 'great men' is perhaps the main reason you don't have countless famous female composers and producers. However they are there and asking the question - do they just not want it enough? Seems a pretty short sighted insinuation to make.

RP response: There are three reasons a man might not be a record producer... 1. He doesn't have the talent, 2. Someone is holding him back, 3. He doesn't want it enough. We stand by the article fully.

Sonia Pottinger!

Really, the Musical Feast comp of her productions on Sanachie is one of my favorite Jamaican records.

Mr. Diamond (diamond),

-- OleM (OleM),

another name that comes to mind is Anjali Dutt but I think she's much more of an engineer than producer

Trina Shoemaker

Probably the most prolific producer/engineer around now that I'm aware of - QOTSA, Wilco, Whiskeytown, Iggy Pop...

www.trinashoemaker.com

Link

Sally Browder (www.sallybrowder.com). Has produced records by Dwight Yoakam, the Red Aunts, Rocket from the Crypt, the Muffs, etc.

Linda Perry

Monica Belluci - krowr!

Sylvia Massy produced Undertow by Tool among others.

Sylvia Robinson produced a lot of the early Sugarhill stuff, didn't she?

Back in the old days, Cordell Jackson of Memphis ran her own label and produced weird rockabilly classix like "She's the One That Got It" for her Moon imprint--there was Sun.

Kim Gordon produced the first Hole album with the guy from Gumball.

There's also Anjali Dutt, I think - she did engineering & production for folks such as Oasis, Swervedriver, MBV, and the Grifters, among others. (I'm pretty sure she did some production work, and I'm just as sure she worked on the Grifters' _Ain't My Lookout_.)

Genya Ravan -- produced Young, Loud & Snotty by the Dead Boys

Also: Joanna Bolme from The Jicks is a sound engineer for Jackpot Studios.

That's almost as bad a claim to fame as being 'Elliot Smith's ex girlfriend'.

Linda Ronstadt has credit for producing a few ellpees for others on the Warners/Asylum label.

Victoria Spivey used to produce records and owned a record company, too.

Genya Ravan also produced Ronnie Spector's solo album.

Terry Garthwaite (better known from Joy of Cooking) regularly produces; I think her first effort was Farron's (sp) first album.

Jazz has a number of women producers. Helen Keane (lots of albums for Bill Evans).

Ani DiFranco and Sinéad O'Connor produced their own records. I think Kate Bush, Utah Phillips and Lucinda Williams did her own as well.

Hillary Johnson ought to be a "name" in just a few years... She's engineered/produced a ton of underground artists and writes for TapeOp magazine occasionally (and no, I am not she! Though she recorded my band's album).

-- Helen Keller, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 NPR's All Things Considered just broadcast the first of a two-part series on Female Record Producers.

Today's installment is archived at www.npr.org/programs/atc/ and the second half is broadcast tomorrow apparently.

April 2003 06:26 (4 years ago) Link

Missy Elliot has her own label and has produced other artists including Tweet.

M'Shell Ndgeocello produces her own stuff.

Yvonne Ellis did live sound for Simply Red for many years and produced some of my stuff in the late 80's too.

Frances McDormand in Laurel Canyon (she produced Folk Implosion!)

Madonna has co-produced most of her own albums, and also produced a couple of songs for Nick Kamen.

Samara Lubelski is doing a lot of engineering these days. And she makes great solo records when she isn't recording with Hall Of Fame.

Imogen Heap. Recent Lass who produced and wrote her entire album called 'speak for yourself' Plus Joni Mitchell did the whole 'blue' album i believe.

Bjork, composes and produces, violinists composing - Nicola Benedetti? I could keep researching and find more - I think their are many unsung composers and producers in the world and a lot of them are female.

I would be interested in any feedback or comments you would like to make about women in the music business as I could possibly use them in my dissertation on gender equality in music. I can be contacted on barcode7977@hotmail.com

Thanks

Jenni

RP response: Er, thanks to you too...

In response to Are some cables better than others, or do they all sound the same?, Clint Millett writes...

I have to agree with you, the cables make no difference to the sound providing you have used the right cable for the job. However, I have found that lapped microphone cables damage very easily, and braided cables are much more rugged. Also, some cables are microphonic, especially guitar cables, which can add some unwanted noise to the sound.

One of the biggest problems with cables is that people don't know how to properly coil them. Incorrect coiling will damage any cable, and will prevent them from lying flat which can cause a trip hazard and possibly equipment damage. If you want to find out how to coil a cable properly, visit a fire hall and ask one of the firemen how they coil their cables, hoses and ropes. My experience using their technique has saved me hundreds of dollars in cable repairs.

I have noticed that very few technicians know how to roll their cables properly and are probably having to replace them on a much more regular basis than is required. Also, when the cables lie flat on the floor, they look so much nicer!

RP response: All very true. Also, we have noticed that if the same person always coils the cables, they stay neater. If different people coil them, even using the same method, they become more unruly. One day, cables will be a thing of the past. We live in hope...

In response to How to record a harp? Will a Shure SM57 and AKG D112 do the trick?, Glenn Floering writes...

I have had the pleasure of micing some wonderful harpists and their instruments both in the studio and on the stage. I like the KSM44 (in mono) in both situations for the best natural sounding reinforcement of the instrument. I have found the best placement to be 1 to 2 feet away from the sound board and strings, 4-6 inches below the center of the sound board. This allows the mid and upper tessitura of the instrument to come through naturally, evenly as compared to the low end.

In response to Mastered music - the shocking truth about what you really hear (with audio), Vince Dj writes...

I think the actual music lost the sense of what the people realy want or need to listen. What we have is ridiculous. Think about what happen with the sound when the great bands in the past make all your sound with distortion. They not work with distortion but creat a clipping or distortion to compose a music. But we wont forget that today is another moment. Everybody want to do the same of others do. They distortion someway the real idea.

In response to Why is recording so difficult?, Evon writes...

I think this is a very good article, in fact it sums up exactly what I am going through as an amateur home recording artiste/engineer. The interesting thing is that there is no magic formula for every mix, but as it mentioned there are some basic things that each engineer must adhere to enroute to producing that satisfying final mix. Also, as the article suggests, I think that this is exactly what makes it fun: the tweaking.

Usually, when mixing down I tend to set the dynamics firstly to an adequate level, then I add whatever little imaging, excitment, reverb multitrack compression etc. in the areas of the spectrum that seems to require "brushing up" in order to acheive the sound I am visualizing.

However, while doing this I am constantly hoping, listening to hear the "magic" jumping out at me. So far, I have heard vast improvements, but still haven't found that magic.
