This is an instrumental piece that was the first song I recorded on my newly purchased Yamaha AW16G multitrack recorder back in 2001. It began simply enough, on the fly, by just putting together and adding layer after layer while experimenting with the features of the machine. The whole thing was done in one day.
There are two drum or percussion tracks, which are a combination of an on-board drum patch and programmed drums from and Alesis 16. The programmed drums were also done on the fly. The guitar was recorded direct using a ART Nitro guitar processor in line.
There are three separate guitar tracks, two rythmn and one lead. There's some overdubbing but a large portion is from just winging it. (I couldn't even play it again if I had to right now - I'd actually have to sit down to figure out and learn what I did.)
The bass was recorded direct with some minor compression.
All mixing and mastering was done on the machine. Compression and EQ were added both to the recorded tracks and on mix-down/mastering. Spatial effects were added post recording except for the guitar lead.
All dynamic and spatial effects were from the onboard processors. The only thing that was mic'd was the vibro-slap that can be heard near teh middle of teh song, which was recorded through a condenser MXL mogami mic.
I think this piece does a pretty good job of keeping the listener interested by not rehashing the same parts, riffs or rhythmns over and over. The lead is quite dynamic with a lot of variation. To date, of all the recordings I've done since, this one still remains one of my favorites.Come on the FREE COURSE TOUR
