"Hell on Earth" by B&H
Hell on Earth was written and recorded by B&H, in a 10ft square room in a wooden portacabin using a pc running Nuendo software and a guillemot maxi studio isis interface.
(All of the above, have now been upgraded! with the exception of B&H )
We originally used an old Yamaha RX17 for the drum beat, but this was replaced with real drums after the song was almost finished.
The rhythm guitar was then recorded using a Squire Strat and Marshall JMP1 valve preamp, plugged into Isis breakout box.
Next was the bass,we routed it through a Yamaha 4 track recorder to give a better signal to the Maxi Studio Isis.
Then we recorded the vocals! SM58, using the Yamaha 4 Track once more as a preamp.
If I remember correctly, we double tracked the vocals for the chorus.
Lead guitar and fills, were then added using Squire Strat and Marshall JMP1 preamp once more! Keyboards were then added to the background to help fill the sound a little.
Hell on Earth was written and recorded all on the same day.(with exception to the drums) After spending a few hours mixing, and a few hours mixing, and a few MORE hours mixing, we decided the drums should be recorded using a drummer!
Fortunately a (drummer) friend of ours records his kit using a Protools setup, so I took him a mix without the drums, He banged away on his kit for a while, and I came away with a disc with 8 drum tracks on it ! :-)nice, (and cheap).
More time was then spent mixing the new drum tracks into the original recording.
(Guess I should have used a click track from the start ) but we live and learn! aye!
All effects used in the mix are VST effects, (reverb, limiter, compression, expander).
The final mix was then run through an Aphex aural exciter, to big it up a little more, and thats about it!
Unfortunately, I am unable to list the mic's or interface used on the drum kit, all I know is there were 8 of em, including two overheads.
Any comments or thoughts, can be left on our webpage.
