Finland's E-Studio upgrades with Matrix
E-Studio, one of Finland's leading recording studios, is run by Jyri Riikonen and Heikki Savolainen who between them have engineered and produced over 100 albums by major artists in every genre. The studio recently underwent a complete revamp, including renovation of its legendary live room and an update of all the studio equipment. Foremost on the list of new acquisitions was a Solid State Logic Matrix console that has already become the heart of the facility.
"When I build a studio I like to imagine it as LEGO bricks," Riikonen explains. "It gives me the freedom to piece together the best equipment from different manufacturers. So when I was asked to update the main E-Studio control room the Matrix was an obvious solution. Before Matrix there was just no easy, cost effective way to connect everything together."
At first Riikonen was a little nervous about bringing what seemed like a small console into such a large environment, but he was soon convinced otherwise…
"A lot of our clients come with big string ensembles or horn sections, so we're used to working with lots of people and mics. The first session we did with Matrix was with a full big band, but after seeing how easily we pulled through that session with the Matrix I have to say I am very happy."
The engineers at E-Studio are also happy with Matrix, as the new console has helped them with their routing issues as well…
"The biggest difference for me as the studio manager is that the maintenance of the gear and routing is now much easier, and of course that makes the engineers happy. That easier routing also means that when I engineer I'm using more outboard gear in my mixes than I would have done in the past. And finally, I also like the way you can easily switch between the analogue and DAW worlds, and also between Pro Tools and Logic. And Matrix works really well as an inline desk for our old 2-inch 16-track recorder as well."
