"Down To The River" by Barak Martin
This song is called Down To The River. I recorded it as a member of the band F-5 Righteous. I have since left the band, but I thought I'd upload a tune to get feedback on my mix. The individual artists on the recording were:
Landis Zehrung: Guitars and Lead Vocals Barak Martin: Bass Zach Beaver: Drums and BGV
I recorded this in a basement. The drums were miked with clip-on CAD drum microphones, with a GLS Audio ES58 on Snare and one University Sound Mic on overhead. They were then mixed down to mono with an ordinary mixer and run into my computer's line input. Vocals were recorded with a GLS Audio ES58. If I remember correctly all the guitars and bass were recorded direct using a Digitech RP150 modeling pedal.
The drums were easily the hardest part of the recording. I was working in a non-isolated control room so I was getting all kinds of spill when I was tweaking the initial sound. Then trying to widen out and tweak the individual drums from a mono track made the process a nightmare. I guess you just have to push through it sometimes. I'm pretty sure I used a convolution reverb on the drums, I can't quite remember though.
During the mixing process I used Audio Technica Headphones and some cheap computer speakers for monitoring. I spent a lot of time running around to different CD players to hear how it sounded.
This song was actually the first song I recorded for that album. I basically spent the whole time learning as I went. Oddly I think this is the most natural sounding song out of the six we recorded.
